Join the Golden State Robotics Board of Directors

Golden State Robotics is an SF Bay Area-based nonprofit bringing hands-on coding and robotics education to students in grades K-8. We are launching our first pilot program in 2027, and we are building our founding Board of Directors now.

What the role involves

Board members share responsibility for the organization: overseeing finances, approving major decisions, and helping us stay compliant as a nonprofit. It is unpaid, volunteer work. Terms are one year, with the option to renew. Officer names become part of the public record with the state, which is standard for California nonprofits.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for people with experience in education, youth programs, nonprofit governance, finance, legal, or fundraising. You do not need experience in all of these areas. If any of them describe you and this mission resonates, we would love to talk.

Time commitment

Board meetings

We plan to meet monthly during this launch year while we get the pilot off the ground, then move to quarterly once things settle in. Each meeting runs up to an hour, held virtually on Zoom.

Overall average

About 1 to 2 hours a month. We handle the day-to-day, so you can focus on helping with higher-level strategy.

During the pilot itself

Optional, but welcome. If you want to be there when students are flying drones, we would love the help. Extra hands for safety and supervision make a real difference.

Student showcase

We are planning a showcase event at the end of the pilot where students present what they built. It can be attended in person or virtually. We would love for every board member to be there.

What every board member does

Orientation

New board members get a walkthrough of how the organization works, our goals, and what to expect.

Attend and vote

Attend board meetings and vote on major decisions: budget, new programs, and significant spending.

Help open doors

Share introductions to potential donors, schools, or volunteers when they come up naturally. No fundraising quotas.

Show up for key moments

Be present for key events, especially the student showcase at the end of the pilot. Virtual attendance is an option.

Conflict-of-interest acknowledgment

Sign a short annual form. Quick and straightforward, standard for any nonprofit board.

Personal giving (optional)

Some board members choose to make a personal gift. This is entirely optional and there is no minimum or expectation.

Officer roles

Secretary

  • Takes minutes at each board meeting
  • Keeps official records organized (bylaws, meeting minutes, board roster)
  • Sends meeting reminders and notices ahead of time

Treasurer

  • Reviews the bank account and basic bookkeeping
  • Gives a short financial update at each meeting
  • Helps think through the budget for the pilot and future growth

Good to know

No prior board experience is required, and you do not need to be local to the SF Bay Area. Meetings are virtual and the time commitment is manageable. If the mission resonates and you have time to contribute, that is what matters most.
